An entertaining Wednesday evening match between Seattle and D.C. was quite the start to this week. Is it a sign of things to come for the rest of the weekend? There’s some entertaining matchups that should provide for some tasty viewing.

With only five league game this weekend because of the SuperLiga, action is a little bit on the light side. That being said, there’s plenty to pay attention to on Saturday. Let’s take a look at what this weekend has in store:

Saturday, June 20
San Jose v Los Angeles
It’s the California rivalry reborn on Saturday, with the Galaxy traveling to San Jose to face the Quakes. Both teams are in need of a win, with San Jose really lagging behind in the Western Conference. The U.S. State Department is still working against them, as Cornell Glen’s visa issues continue. That denies them a strong striker up top, but they’ll need more than that to break through against the Galaxy. LA will be without Landon Donovan again, as well as Eddie Lewis who was sent off against Real Salt Lake. It’ll be a stern road test for LA, though it seems likely they’ll return to their drawing ways.
San Jose 1-1 Los Angeles

New York v Seattle
Seattle should be kicking themselves a bit for failing to win the Wednesday night game. They attacked United’s 3-5-2 very well, but a defensive mishap late on cost them. This week, they’ll take the show on the road to New York, going up against a Red Bull side that is down for the count. Making matters worse for the Red Bulls are the injuries that are starting to mount—Mac Kandji, Jorge Rojas, and Albert Celades are all questionable for this one. The arrival of a terrific Seattle attack won’t make anything easier for this one—though I think New York can hold on for a draw in this one.
New York 2-2 Seattle

Houston v Real Salt Lake
The road woes were reversed for Real Salt Lake last weekend, but the task is much tougher this time around. A trip to Houston awaits, where they’ll face the hottest team in the league. The stingy defense of the Dynamo, led by Geoff Cameron and Pat Onstad, is one of many reasons why this club is riding high. I’ve said that just about every week RSL has the sort of talent to make an impression on just about anyone, and if Javier Morales and Clint Mathis come to play this team could surprise Houston—though I don’t see that actually happening.
Houston 2-1 Real Salt Lake

FC Dallas v Columbus
Can the front office in Frisco get it together and crack 10,000 with the defending champs coming to town? I’m going to go ahead and say no. Dallas hosts the Crew, so be sure to tune in and catch a glimpse of the sparse crowd on hand at Pizza Hut Park. As far as the actual game is concerned, Columbus has been hot as of late, thanks in most part to Guillermo Barros Schelotto and his new found ability to score goals. Dallas is breaking down at the back, and is in danger of dropping their second consecutive game at home.
FC Dallas 1-2 Columbus

Colorado v D.C. United
Perhaps the most interesting matchup of the weekend. On one hand, you have D.C. United visiting the altitude, playing their third game in seven days. On the other side, there is a Rapids squad who hasn’t played in two weeks. Who has the advantage? United has been trumping their depth all year, and it’ll be put to the test tonight. Colorado will be missing Conor Casey and welcoming Pat Noonan into their side, so whatever he plays could have an impact on the game. I’m giving the Rapids the advantage because of home cookin’.
Colorado 2-1 D.C. United

Record last week: 3-4
Season to date: 38-64

Ok, so perhaps the number of players going missing because of the Confederations Cup doesn’t really have impact as a news story. Just a handful of players are missing, and they’ll be overseas for just a few weeks.

The biggest loss has to be Landon Donovan, but with the way the Galaxy handled themselves at BMO Field last week, could they be up for it this time around? The health of Edson Buddle will go a long way in determining the success of the Galaxy, especially during these weeks without Landycakes.

Plenty of other reasons to tune in this weekend, as the vultures continue to circle Juan Carlos Osorio, the Chicago visit Barack Obama, and Seattle tries to break out of their recent funk.

Saturday, June 13
D.C. United v Chicago
Toss in your “battle for first place” anecdote into this one. The Fire take on United, with D.C. needing a win to take over first place. United has already faced Chicago once this season, a match that predictably ended in a 1-1 draw. D.C. has struggled to win in front of the home crowd, and with Luciano Emilio set to miss out through suspension, might find themselves at the end of another typical result.
D.C. United 1-1 Chicago

Toronto v New York
Problems are brewing in Toronto, with league struggles mounting over the past couple of weeks. They’ll get a welcome antidote for their troubles with the arrival of New York, who are far and away the worst team in the league at the moment. The Fire JCO bandwagon is gaining momentum, and another bad loss away from home will only fuel the fire. As for Toronto, new acquisition Nick Garcia might be called upon to jump into central defense, but it’s goals that this team is sorely lacking. Pablo Vitti or Chad Barrett need to step up and relieve some pressure off their maligned front office.
Toronto 3-0 New York

Dallas v Houston
It’s the Texas derby and few people in their right mind would give Dallas a chance. Houston has been on fire as of late — winners of their last four matches, even with the injury to Brian Ching, they haven’t skipped a beat. Stuart Holden has been doing a bit of goal scoring, and could garner some attention from Bob Bradley when it comes to the Gold Cup. I can’t really give Dallas a chance in this one — but if this league follows its typically unpredictable trends, maybe they’ll get something out of it.
Dallas 1-2 Houston

Kansas City v New England
A tough trip for Steve Nicol’s charges, who must adjust to life without Taylor Twellman — at least for the weekend — after two games with him getting significant minutes. The Revolution are on the rise, and a stern test out in KC awaits. The Wizards have been unconvincing as of late, struggling to a 2-0 loss despite being a man up for almost half of the game. Josh Wolff has been quiet, which is bad news since he’s carried most of the scoring load. His side is quite capable, yet haven’t really played up to their expectations in recent weeks. Twellman missing from the lineup is good news for them, and means they might get something out of this one.
Kansas City 2-2 New England

Seattle v San Jose
The perfecting antidote for a floundering Sounder side. San Jose comes to down. Right before Seattle’s struggles began, they hosted the Earthquakes. And they’ll face them again as San Jose remains in the midst of roster and formation restructuring. Nick Garcia has been shipped back home to Canada, leaving a spot in the starting lineup open. Bobby Convey and Darren Huckerby are both battling injuries, with the former listed as out. Huckerby might get some time on the pitch, as he made a late substitution last weekend. Arturo Alvarez remains the lone bright spot for the Quakes, who are in desperate need of another win. Up in Sounder country, the well-documented case of Fredy vs. Freddie continues, as the two struggle to get the offense flowing together. You’d think if both were performing at optimum levels, this team would be hitting its stride once again.
Seattle 2-1 San Jose

Los Angeles v Real Salt Lake
The proverbial road dogs are away from Rio Tinto again, this time traveling to the HDC where they’ll face a Galaxy team ripe with confidence. Real Salt Lake can’t buy a break on the road, and I don’t think their fortunes will be changing anytime soon. Los Angeles has begun to show signs of life, coming away from BMO Field last weekend with a rare win. While they’ll be without Donovan for the next two to three weeks, the fitness of Edson Buddle is improving as is his playing time. I just can’t pick Real on the road against anyone. Can’t do it.
Los Angeles 2-0 Real Salt Lake

Sunday, June 14
Columbus v Chivas USA
League leaders Chivas have witnessed their massive lead atop the MLS shrink, and the disappearing act could be complete after this weekend. They head to Ohio, and will face a Crew team who overcame Chad Marshall’s madness to win in Kansas City. Guillermo Barros Schelotto is reclaiming his MVP form from 2008, nearing the top of MLS in goal scoring. While Zach Thornton and Chivas aren’t fading fast, they have struggled to put the ball in the back of the net. Honors even at the end of this one.
Columbus 1-1 Chivas

Record last week: 2-4
Season to date: 35-60

With two games already completed, the twelfth week of MLS is already well underway. United surprised no one with their 2-0 defeat of New York, while the resurgent Houston Dynamo clamped down for a 1-0 shutout in Chicago. Plenty more to talk about today, including a number of international absences.

First though, there was a lot of Friday chatter about tweeting Don Garber in hopes of improving referee in MLS. An interesting tactic, and the step in the right directions. While the numbers weren’t overwhelming yesterday, it was definitely a solid showing on Twitter. That, in and of itself, was funny to type.

The problems with officiating run deep after just twelve weeks. Just ask D.C. United, who on three occasions have been subjugated to three calls or inactions by a referee that were deemed incorrect. People are human and will make mistakes, but one major need for this league is to have at least competent officials. No more last questionable penalties in the last minute deciding results.

I’ve certainly glossed over this enough. Remember, if you’re on Twitter, follow MLS Offside right here. Let’s take a look at these remaining games.

Saturday, June 6
Toronto v Los Angeles
A meeting of two teams among the hardest hit by international absences. Amado Guevara is off with the Honduran side, where he will face the Galaxy’s Landon Donovan in Chicago tonight. That’s a massive game for the U.S. all of a sudden, so it’ll be nice if Donovan shows up. Back to MLS, it’s a chance for Toronto to jump back into a tie with D.C. for second, and trailing Chicago by only two points after their loss to Houston last night. Guevara’s loss won’t be felt as hard as Donovan’s who has had a hand in 10 of LA’s 13 goals. Dwayne De Rosario more than makes up for the loss of Amado, while the Galaxy rely on the likes of Dema Kovalenko.
Toronto 2-0 Los Angeles

Kansas City v Columbus
The Wizards are another one of those teams right in the thick of things in the East. Last week’s draw in Los Angeles was helped on by the loss of Josh Wolff and Santiago Hirsig to red card suspensions. Both will be back and should return to the starting lineup, a big boost for KC. Another win for Columbus in this one, and the road back to contention is no longer a daunting climb. Making the Crew’s life difficult today is the absence of three players — Alejandro Moreno, Duncan Oughton and Frankie Hejduk. That combined with the home field advantage of tiny Community America Ballpark and I see Kansas City getting the win.
Kansas City 1-0 Columbus

Real Salt Lake v Colorado
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (aka Real Salt Lake) make their way back home in a renewal of the Rocky Mountain Cup. I’m not much to buy into the faux rivalries created by MLS, but this one has somewhat of a nice ring to it. Visiting Colorado has it all to do, as the late call up of Conor Casey is a huge blow for a team already missing one of its key midfielders in Pablo Mastroeni. Salt Lake needs a win here if they want to stop the bleeding — they haven’t won in quite some time. Now is the time to capitalize on their home field advantage and some missing Rapids.
Real Salt Lake 3-2 Colorado

Chivas USA v Seattle
Draw-itis has firmly entrenched itself within Seattle. A string of five consecutive draws, combined with a Houston winning streak has knocked the Sounders down to second place. A return trip to the Home Depot Center is on hand for them as they take on Chivas USA. The Goats have been quiet themselves, unable to muster a win since a 1-0 win against Real Salt Lake on May 9. So what’s going to give? Jonathan Bornstein and Sacha Klejstan both miss out through USA duty, but that wouldn’t really favor Seattle all that much. The big question for the Sounders is the status of Osvaldo Alonso — their winless slump has coincided with his injury. If he makes it back into the starting lineup, their chances increase exponentially. But if he can’t, then back to square one, and probably another Chivas win in LA.
Chivas USA 2-1 Seattle

Sunday, June 7
Dallas v San Jose
It’s the battle of the two worst teams in MLS as San Jose travels down to Frisco, Texas to face FC Dallas. Neither side has been convincing at all this season — though both have a chance to build a comeback, coming off wins in the previous week. The Quakes will be without Bobby Convey, who misses out with a hamstring strain suffered Thursday. He didn’t make the injury report, however, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens. Simon Elliot, away with New Zealand, will also miss out. The variable in this one for San Jose is the return of Darren Huckerby — listed as questionable, if the midfielder is fit, he could help tip the scale’s in his team’s favor. Dallas will only be missing Coach Schellas Hyndman, who is suspended through June 7, so he’ll coach from somewhere above the pitch. I bet both sides cancel each other out in a draw.
Dallas 2-2 San Jose

New England v New York
This is a tough one for the Red Bulls. Only a few days after another tough loss in D.C., they now have to travel up to New England and face a Revolution squad that is starting to show signs of turning it around. That is due to the recovery of Taylor Twellman, and depending on how healthy he is on Sunday may make his first start of the season. Juan Carlos Osorio needs a result in the worst way, something made harder by his side’s 0-5-1 record away from home. He tried something new on Thursday with a 3-5-2, but now will be without Jorge Rojas to spearhead the midfield. The health of Macoumba Kandji will be a big factor, as the lanky striker has partnered well with Angel when not sidelined with an injury. I’m going to be a bit conservative and say that it ends in a draw.
New England 1-1 New York

Record last week: 3-6
Season to date: 33-56

The twelfth week of MLS action kicks off in its semi-normal Thursday night time slot, with ESPN carrying its game of the week from Washington, D.C. The New York Red Bull return to the scene of their 5-3 humiliation in a U.S. Open Cup play-in game, eager to prove themselves on the road. On Friday night, an interesting match up in Chicago takes place, with the Fire hosting the surging Houston Dynamo. Let’s take a look at both games first, and I’ll be coming at you with a preview the remaining games either tomorrow or Saturday.

D.C. United v New York
The Atlantic Cup rivalry heats up once again, as the Red Bulls travel to D.C. to face United one last time this season. New York will be desperate to prevent a repeat performance from the aforementioned play-in match, while that would suit United just fine. Both sides are nipped by the International conflict, as Jorge Rojas, Andrew Boyens, and Alfredo Pacheco missing time for New York, while Avery John has shipped off to train with Trinidad & Tobago. The Red Bulls will be desperate for success on the road, given that they now face a daunting two month stretch with numerous games away from Giants Stadium. United will be looking to assert themselves not only over a bitter rival, but also in what is becoming a tightly contested Eastern Conference. In depth preview also available here from Dave, and here (for a little bit of self promotion).
D.C. United 2-0 New York

Chicago v Houston
The new strike force in Houston will face a tough test, as they’ll be without Brian Ching for this one. Their Chicago opponents will want to put Sunday in the past, though they’ll be hit particularly hard by international absences as well. Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Bakary Soumare and Gonzalo Segares will each miss out on Friday’s game because of national team duty. Houston has been unstoppable as of late, on a seven game unbeaten streak that includes five wins in their last six games. It’s a chance for Ade Akinbiyi to prove why he was brought over with the Dynamo. This will no doubt be a close one, probably ending in a draw.
Chicago 1-1 Houston

ESPN Primetime Thursday is back this evening, as the Fire travel out to L.A. to take on Chivas USA. It’s the respective conference leaders going head-to-head, with Chicago on top of the East with 18 points and 24 for the Goats, who are best in the West.

The magical coaching tale of Preki continues this season. Despite once again facing a number of untimely injuries, he probably couldn’t ask for a better standing through 10 weeks of the season. Zach Thornton, whose well-document resurgence has been vital to his side’s early success will be facing off against his old team. After tonight’s game Preki will likely also be without Jonathan Bornstein and Sacha Klejstan for over a week, as both were called up into Bob Bradley’s USMNT camp starting Sunday. It’s been Chivas’ worst stretch of the season with back-to-back draws, though in this league that’s seen as a good run — but considering they started by winning seven of their first nine games, they’ll be out to break that dry spell at home

For the Fire, the unbeaten results have continued, and can recently boast about that having won their last two games. Chris Rolfe continues to bang down the door at a starting forward slot — he supplanted Patrick Nyarko in the starting lineup last week for only the second time this season. Rolfe has thrived in his substitute role, scoring 3 goals in 320 minutes of action. Don’t tell that to him though, as I’m sure he’s itching to be in from the word go.

It’s a match up of the team with the most goals scored against the side with the least goals conceded. What is going to give? Probably a draw. I’m going to be around for a bonus liveblog of tonight’s action as well, so be sure to tune in for that.
Chivas 1-1 Chicago

It’s bottom of the East against the bottom of the West tonight as the Earthquakes try to get something right in Ohio. The acquisition of Trinidad and Tobago striker Cornell Glen is now official, though it is unknown what role he’ll play tonight. It will be the sixth MLS stop for the journeyman Glenn, who is expected to help jumpstart a struggling San Jose offense. Nothing has gone right in recent weeks, with the defense borderline awful and the offense hardly providing confidence.

The Crew, recipients of an off weekend will be well-rested and ready to go up against the bottom feeding Earthquakes. Of all the struggling teams this season, Columbus is one that seems on the cusp of getting it right. They’ve been battered by some niggling injuries which are slowly recovering. Frankie Hejduk’s impending national team departure won’t exactly help things, but they’ll adjust fine. The Crew should win this one pretty easily, but knowing the way this season has gone, it’ll be a draw. Still picking the win though.
Columbus 2-0 San Jose

The tenth week of the season is now upon us. Lot’s of exciting story lines to gloss over, starting first with the ballot stuffing going on in Seattle. I’ve got no problem with it, and love hearing how the game has caught fire in that area. If anything, wishing that MLS had a similar presence in another city in the U.S. would be quite a good day indeed. Since that doesn’t seem like happening, it makes sense to both love and be envious of the situation out there.

Another significant development is the looming international schedule. Depending on what Bob Bradley (and other coaches) does with the World Cup Qualifiers and Confederations Cup, a few teams may be lacking in June. Then of course July will be the Gold Cup, which will probably have a greater effect on the league across the board. So enjoy these last two weekends before people start bringing up the “country vs. MLS” debate. On to this weekend:

Saturday, May 23
Toronto v New England
People always admire Toronto FC’s atmosphere at BMO Field. It could be such a fortress of power, yet this season TFC sports a less than intimidating record there of 2-2-2. What could be a major asset continues to be a source of bemusement for a team that on one day looks like a legitimate contender, then the next could find itself back at the bottom of the East. They’ll face a New England squad that continues to be beat up and marred by injuries. With the Revolution still recovering, I think it’ll be a stalemate.
Toronto 1-1 New England

D.C. United v Real Salt Lake
So can D.C. be considered a legitimate contender now? They’ve got offensive firepower and depth that must make most head coach’s jealous. Not so fast though, as their revolving goalkeeper game is doing them no favors. If they can sort that out, there’s no question that they are a force to be reckoned with. On the other side of things, Real Salt Lake takes their well documented struggles on the road to face United. Please don’t let this be another draw. I’m sick and tired of those.
D.C. United 2-0 Real Salt Lake

Houston v San Jose
The renewal of the old vs. new rivalry as the expansion San Jose side takes on the club it now embodies. Talking about teams headed in two directions, here’s a prime example. Houston has started to take off despite lacking a consistent goal scoring alongside Brian Ching, though they should lament blowing a 1-0 lead with a man advantage last weekend. I like Houston in this one — San Jose lacks the offense to put up a fight.
Houston 1-0 San Jose

Dallas v Los Angeles
What’s the promotion for Dallas this week? Looking much better this time around. Perhaps the $1 beers will be designed to get the fans to forget about the performance on the pitch that they’ll see. Facing the Galaxy on a Saturday night will hopefully bring some kind of entertainment, but with the way both sides have been playing of late this will be one to forget.
Dallas 0-0 Los Angeles

Kansas City v Chivas USA
A tough matchup for Chivas, as they head to Kansas City and deal with the tiny confines of Community America Ballpark. This is an even bigger one for KC, as they could stake a claim as a contender in the Eastern Conference after their impressive win over RSL on the road. Josh Wolff is in the spotlight, and while he is supposedly dealing with some injury issues, his presence is needed. In the case he can’t go, the Wizards will need Davy Arnaud to claim out from under the rock he’s been playing under. I’ll go with the easy bet on this one: draw.
Kansas City 2-2 Chivas USA

Colorado v Seattle
A undermanned Seattle side has traveled out to DSG to face a Rapids team that is once again flying under the radar. No one claims to know what to expect from Colorado, but Gary Smith seems to have them working hard each game, getting pretty consistent play from his team. Conor Casey is beginning to learn how to best utilize his side, while Colin Clark could be pushing for a spot with the U.S. Men’s National Team, at least in the Gold Cup. The Sounders will be missing Zach Scott, Freddie Ljungberg, and Brad Evans. Colorado should have enough to grind out the win.
Colorado 2-1 Seattle

Sunday, May 24
New York v Chicago
The homestand continues for the Red Bull, who look to bounce back from their woeful performance against D.C. in the Open Cup play-in match. They’ll be without Carlos Johnson and Jorge Rojas, the former injured and the latter suspended. It’ll be a tough match as the Fire come in to town — the only unbeaten team in MLS. A draw is written all over this one.
New York 1-1 Chicago

Record Last Week: 1-6
Season to Date: 26-42

Eight weeks of the Major League Soccer season have passed and there are a few conclusions that I can draw:

Chivas is the real deal. Anyone still questioning the legitimacy of their strong start has nothing left to stand on now. Zach Thornton continues to be a dominant force in goal, while their organization at the back continues to stifle opponents. The big question will now follow them the rest of the season: have they peaked too soon?

Dallas and San Jose have a lot of work to do. Both of these teams entered 2009 with a positive feeling. The Quakes had narrowly missed out on the playoffs and Dallas seemed to think they’d brought in the final pieces of the puzzle to get them over the hump. Fast forward to the present, and the two sides have it all to do, as they sit with the two lowest point totals in the league.

A draw is the result of choice thus far. I don’t know what the logical or tactical explanation for it is, but 22 of the 61 games have ended with that result. That’s 36% of the time, a statistic that best shows how tight and intense MLS match ups are.

While there is plenty more to deduce from the first eight weeks, three-quarters of the season remains. Much more to learn from this weekend’s action. Let’s take a look:

Saturday, May 16
Toronto v Chicago
The Fire head on the road, facing off against Toronto FC at BMO Field. Both sides are in the mix in the East, with the Fire holding rank as the only unbeaten side — though with six draws — will be out to get something against TFC. For all the talk about how BMO is hostile to play in, Toronto’s record is just 2-1-2 at home. Perhaps not what you’d expect from a place like that. Here’s a bold prediction: another draw.
Toronto 1-1 Chicago

New England v Colorado
For the Revolution, a 2-2-3 record isn’t too shabby at this point of the season when you consider the injury problems they’ve faced. Taylor Twellman remains sidelined, and as of Wednesday Matt Reis is out with a concussion. While nothing has been favorable to the Revolution, they face a Rapids team coming off a week of rest. Colorado remains an enigma this season — they’ve played at time solid and consistent soccer, while other times looking flat and listless. Steve Nicol will have his charges ready for a tough battle and his side will come away with three points.
New England 2-0 Colorado

New York v Houston
A rematch of last season’s Western Conference Finals takes the Dynamo to Giants Stadium where they put their shutout streak on the line against the New York Red Bulls. Houston is on the rise, riding a shutout streak of 403 minutes — just 54 minutes short of the record that Kasey Keller posted this season. New York certainly has the firepower to break down the Dynamo defense, and I think they will — though Houston will have enough to come away with a point.
New York 2-2 Houston

Dallas v Seattle
Can it get any uglier for Dallas? They sit at a 1-6-1 record, bottom of the table, and host the exciting new kids Seattle. You know things are bad in Frisco when they’re promoting the visiting team’s owner in order to attract paying customers. I’m serious when I say this — the first 10,000 fans to the game will receive Drew Carey glasses. The crowd might not even go about 10k — they’ve only managed that once this season. There’s really no other reason to head out and see Dallas, so the front office has to resort to this. Hopefully, a turnaround can begin, but I can’t see it happening this week.
Dallas 1-2 Seattle

Real Salt Lake v Kansas City
The Wizards travel to Rio Tinto Stadium looking to bounce back from their loss to Columbus last weekend. It’s a tough task for them as they face Real Salt Lake in the venue where they play well. RSL boasts a 3-0-1 home record, with 14 goals scored against just 4 conceded. It’s not hard to know who to favor in this one.
Real Salt Lake 2-0 Kansas City

Chivas USA v D.C. United
Number one in the West meets number one in the East as Chivas hosts D.C. United. It’s hard to give D.C. much of a chance when you consider how stifling the Chivas defense has been — having conceded just three goals so far on the year. United has scored the most goals in the league with 15, but will have a tough task of cracking Thornton and co. While United has the offense to score a goal or two, I think Chivas will be able to hold them off in the end.
Chivas 2-1 D.C. United

Sunday, May 17
Los Angeles v Columbus
The Crew finally got themselves on track against the Wizards. Heading to the Home Depot Center isn’t the most daunting task, especially since it’s the Galaxy they’ll be facing, and not Chivas. Both sides are in need of a shot in the arm, and a win. Los Angeles should have enough firepower to see off the Crew, though a draw is also very likely.
Los Angeles 3-1 Columbus

Last weekend’s record: 4-3
Season to date: 25-36

Apologies for the lateness of the post, but it’s a busy time of the year. Lots of action today, with the Crew hosting a celebration for the 10-year anniversary of their stadium opening. Will that coincide with their first victory of the season? In D.C., the stadium theme takes the form of a supporters’ march to RFK in hopes of helping the team remain in the nation’s capital. Here’s a look at the rest of this weekend’s action:

Saturday, May 9
Columbus v Kansas City
Another chance for the Crew’s first win of the season. It’s been an inconsistent start for them, to say the least, and a return to Crew Stadium will hopefully be an omen of things to come. The Wizards, fresh off a draw with United, haven’t been at their sharpest of late. For me, all signs point to a Crew victory: the return of Frankie Hejduk, celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Crew Stadium, KC’s short week, and desperation for that first win.
Columbus 2-1 Kansas City

D.C. United v Toronto FC
Lots going on in D.C. today — fans meeting up for a stadium rally and Toronto FC coming to town for another winner-takes-first place match up. United was a bit lethargic in their match against KC on Wednesday, but considering they rested half their starters they should be pleased with the result on the road. Both these teams come in having played mid-week, and I would expected United’s home-field advantage to help make a difference.
D.C. United 3-1 Toronto FC

Chicago v New England
An interesting time of the Revolution. They haven’t scored since a Shalrie Joseph header against D.C. United three weeks ago, and have been outscored 9-0 in that time. While that is every cause for panic, they have an average record of 2-2-2. Steve Nicol still wants to stop the bleeding, holding private practices with no press. They travel to Chicago, a place that hasn’t been kind to New England. The Fire haven’t impressed me of late, despite boosting the supposedly deepest team in the league. Closing out games has been an issue: if they jump out to a lead against the Revolution can they hold onto it?
Chicago 2-0 New England

Houston v Dallas
The ‘El Capitán’ rivalry is renewed — and it’s all Houston for the taking. There isn’t much positive to say about Dallas, boasting one of the league’s worst defenses, and in need of a quick turnaround. Facing a Dynamo team that has turned themselves around as of late won’t be of any help — throw in Dallas’ struggles at Robertson Park and this one has a Dynamo win written all over it.
Houston 1-0 Dallas

Chivas v Real Salt Lake
Every road game for Real, it’s the same thing. Can they win? Can they get a result away from Utah? So far, the answer has been no this season, and I can’t think of a good reason why Chivas will be the first to yield something to them on the road. The Goats continue to impress despite not playing the most attractive brand of soccer. But it’s the results that count, and Preki has his players ready on a weekly basis.
Chivas 2-1 Real Salt Lake

Sunday, May 10
Seattle v Los Angeles
A mother’s day bash at Qwest field. Seattle will be looking to keep pace with Chivas, and should do so pretty easily in this one. Los Angeles can rejoice in the fact that someone aside Landon Donovan set up and scored a goal, with Mike Magee’s late equalizer Wednesday proving to be a huge shot in the arm. While that momentum would do well to carry on to this one, I can’t see it happening. Keller with another shutout in this one.
Seattle 2-0 Los Angeles

Season to date: 23-32

Wednesday, May 6
Kansas City v D.C. United
Momentum is in United’s corner after back-to-back league wins against the Red Bulls and Dallas. While they aren’t the most daunting competitors, the Black-and-Red have put together some of their most consistent performances in memory. While it has vaulted them to the top of the East (for the time being), there is a no sense of confidence oozing from the nation’s capital. The addition of Dejan Jakovic seems to have solidified their backline, and while goalkeeping questions remain, it’s evident that perhaps D.C. will be much stronger this season than some expected. Taking on the Wizards in Kansas City means a trip to the microscopic confines of Community America Ballpark, which generally serves as home advantage for KC. Curt Onalfo seems to know the kind of lineup these days. I’m not sure who I like in this one — D.C. away from RFK still has me nervous, despite their recent success. KC, hasn’t finished particularly well themselves. I’m calling it a draw.
Kansas City 1-1 D.C. United

Real Salt Lake v Los Angeles
If you’re a fan of Real Salt Lake, their home-away form must drive you crazy. Reverting to old form, they dropped a result against the Rapids last Saturday. Word is in that Javier Morales has been suspended for tonight’s match against the Galaxy, so it could be more difficult for Real to win. That being said, LA has inspired no confidence in me whatsoever — Landon Donovan is their entire offense. Chris Seitz will be in goal for Salt Lake, finally getting a chance to prove himself with the Nick Rimando injury. Look for Seitz to seize the initiative and get a shutout against the Galaxy.
Real Salt Lake 2-0 Los Angeles
