They Can Do It

SOCCER-CONCACAF/

Tomorrow, Real Salt Lake can, and, I predict, will make history. More than simply bringing home victory in the CONCACAF Champions League, winning tomorrow would stamp RSL’s ticket to the FIFA Club World Cup. They would be the first MLS team to win the CCL in a decade, and the first ever to qualify for the Club World Cup.

I simply cannot overstate how [freaking] insane this is.

And the best is, they can do it. This isn’t the usual long-shot MLS David v Goliath matchup which we’re all so used to reading about. Rio Tinto Stadium hasn’t seen a loss in 37 straight matches, and the claret and blue already tied their opposition in Mexico, a substiantially harder game. Salt Lake is hot, Monterray is slumping, and conditions could not be better.

Of course, it’s not just Utahns who are excited by this, as all of the MLS community has gotten behind the push to send RSL to the CWC. We may have our local alliances, but the opportunity for one of our own to represent our nation and its league’s growth transcends any club on club hate. In this moment, and in the face of this opportiunity, we are one league united. It goes without saying that seeing an MLS club on the international stage would instantly boost the leagues prestige, even if it were to struggle to win. Just the act of qualifying shows our continued improvement and increasing quality, and few could deny that such an upswing is taking place.

Still, questions remain. What if RSL doesn’t win? If they do, does that mean MLS will have officially begun a stronger input into the CCL, or is this temporary? Further, is MLS ready to compete on the international stage? Will we be squashed like bugs by the giants of the soccer world, or will we show them what we’ve got? Will that even be a lot?

In the end, we’re all praying for RSL. I know exactly what channel I’ll be watching at 10 PM tomorrow, and I hope you do too (FSC by the way). I’m sure my fellow MetroBulls supporters will forgive me just this once as I say,

LETS GO SALT LAKE!

What do you think?

i think that the only way for the MLS to have a stronger input into the CCL is for ALL MLS teams who qualify to give more importance to it. i don’t follow the MLS as closely as i’d like to, but from what i gather teams generally prefer to prioritize the league over any cup tournaments, and this is not the correct attitude to have if we want the MLS to improve its international reputation.

i think that MLS clubs can compete, even if it’s more on the level of, say, Portuguese teams in the European CL, in that they’re good, solid teams that are not to be taken lightly, but aren’t at the level of the Barcelonas and Man Us.

will this game be streaming anywhere?

You gotta cheer for Salt Lake and any team that takes this tournament seriously, regardless of where they’re from.

umm.. why is there a site for the mls? its about as good as the english 3rd division. Was other here once and was astounded at how bad the the quality of football is here! there is not just NO talent coming through or coming in that would make it in the big leagues, but no tactical knowledge among the managers! and all the fans know nothing about football as shown above.

    CMON U IRONS!
