What Would you Name Philadelphia?

By: travis | January 8th, 2009

Word from Ives is that they have four names that will be voted for to name the new Philadelphia franchise – that is if it manages to stay above water.

The four names:

AC Philadelphia
SC Philadelphia
Philadelphia City
Philadelphia Union

Not a bad lot to choose from, if you ask me. It could be much worse, knowing American sports and their penchant for choosing ridiculous nicknames. I haven’t found the names listed elsewhere, but leave it to Ives to break the news first. The Philadelphia Zolos didn’t make the cut, however. The name is supposed to be selected by the end of January, so this timing makes sense. Will update it when I find out more.

SC Philly… Part of why I love football is the vast variety of cultures it brings together… Instead of copying other teams the MLS should focus on creating strictly American soccer culture and team names is the best place to start

I think they should recruit solely from Benin and become the Philadelphia Squirrels.

They should somehow get the phrase “cheese steak” into their name cause, well, thats really the only thing I know about the State of Philadelphia.

It should definately be Philadelphia Hotspur. Unfortunatley they would be immediatley be called the hotspurs in error. I suggested it when I put my down payment on season tickets, but I guess won’t make the cut.

Stupid Question, but what does AC and SC stand for??? to be honest, i don’t know why they were so quick to dismiss the idea of “Zolos”. that name has a cool ring to it…

They dont stand for anything, Eddie.
Toronto FC isn’t legally Toronto Football Club, it’s Toronto FC on all the paperwork.

However other clubs use Athletic Club(AC) and Soccer Club (SC)

I would say its through the lesson of Toronto FC that neither of those names would be picked, plus AC = Atlantic City in that area.

Philadelphia Union would be out because it is too close to DC United.

This leaves Philadelphia City as the remaining option which not only has that English flavour [note my spelling] but unlike other MLS attempts at European style names, it makes sense.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Philadelphia Wanderers though.
