Week Six Recap
By: travis | May 5th, 2008After six weeks of MLS action, things are starting to become clearer. The Crew remain the hottest team, while DC United continues to play sub par, as do the Dynamo. Toronto FC continues to put solid results together, although they did have their three game winning streak snapped. All this, plus much more, if you continue reading below. That, and goals of the week.
Toronto FC 1-1 New York Red Bull
Another Toronto home game, another dynamic crowd up in Canada. It’s no surprise to me, but I love the enthusiasm. As do a number of other more credible writers. Not that there aren’t other great supporters groups out there. But not everyone loves them. Anyway. Toronto took the lead when they caught the Red Bull napping on a free kick, cheeky play from Robert. A Dave Van der Bergh free kick equalized things for New York. Look for them to come back even stronger with the time off they now have.
Columbus 2-1 Kansas City
It was a tale of two halves in Columbus as two blunders by the Wizards yielded goals from Adam Moffat and Robbie Rogers. Despite losing Roger Espinoza to a red card in the first half. The second half saw a resurgence from the Wizards, but they only managed a goal off a penalty kick from Claudio Lopez in the 79th minute. KC has been struggling as of late, going 1-2-1 in their last four and have only managed one goal from open play in their last five games.
New England 0-3 Chicago
For already the second time this season, the Revolution have their butts handed to them by the fire. It was a particular efficient offense performance (three goals from five shots). The good news is, Steve Rolston made his 2008 debut. The bad, Taylor Twellman is still out of action. And it seems like they miss him.
Houston 0-0 Chivas
An ugly game, and on HD so no highlights. I’d be surprised if there were any. Nine cards were issued as well. The best news to come out of it is the pyrotechnician who was injured appears to be alright. Brad Guzan finally gets a shut out as well.
Real Salt Lake 2-2 LA Galaxy
Much to the delight of MLS suits, the matches involving the Galaxy continue to entertain. At first, it seemed like the Galaxy were going to get mopped off the pitch, but good ol’ Becks was there to the rescue, notching a brace on two long range shots. It was back and forth the rest of the way, with an absolutely atrocious offside call costing RSL a goal that would have made it 3-2. And props to Nick Rimando for a save on a header from Landon Donovan. If you haven’t seen it, check it out.
San Jose 0-0 Dallas
The Quakes opened up Buck Shaw Stadium to a poor offensive performance. They mustered all of one shot on goal the entire match. Dallas remains tied at the top of the West, despite not scoring in their last two games.
Colorado 2-0 DC United
Revenge is a dish best served cold. In Colorado. Where DC United haven’t won since 2000, and the losing continues. They’re in last place, but more importantly, the Rapids are in first, tied up top with Dallas in the West. Former DCers Christian Gomez and Facundo Erpen had a hand (well, foot) in both goals. Gomez set up both while Erpen netted the second. Marcelo Gallardo, the man who took Gomez’s spot at United, seemed to have no support as United were reported to be quite rotten on the pitch.
Goal of the Week
Step forward to receive your award Mr. Beckham. And not for the second goal – you knock in free kicks like those with a higher regularity. The first one, in which the Real defenders looked afraid of what you were going to do with the ball nets this highly coveted and prestigious award that I like to hand out every week.

Are you sure it was just one shot on goal for The Quakes? Off the top of my head, I can count at least three and I know there were more than that. None of the shots made it into the goal but there were shots for sure.
