The Coolest Thing Ever?
By: Ben | October 27th, 2011When I went to watch the Columbus vs Colorado Wild Card Play In, which MLS kindly streamed for free on their website, I noticed a tab that read “Score Predictor” Check it out; you’ll be glad you did. This Castrol Score predictor analyzes (or at least claims to analyze) every minute of play from the past 35-someodd weeks, and gives a prediction of who’s favored in each match. The results are beyond cool.
Now, of course, the Predictor only gives probability stats, so even if the team that’s favored doesn’t win you can’t really say it’s ever “wrong”. The machine said that Dallas had 48% odds of victory against New York, and we all know where that went, but I still stand by this thing’s predictions, or am, at least, intrigued by them. So far, it lists every home team as a winner (except for the Red Bulls, who were only given a 35% chance of victory for their home match against LA on Sunday), but as a whole favors Seattle over RSL, Colorado significantly over Columbus, and, as previously mentioned, LA strongly over NY. Houston and Philly are considered near equals, though the simulator gives Houston a slight edge.
The best thing to do, though, with this system is to play around. On their Score Predictor, you can match up any two teams, pick who’s home and who’s away, and find a predicted result. Suffice to say, it’s pretty sick.
So go have fun and watch this weekend’s four matches. May the best team win, except for, of course, the occasional upset.

Ah, this is what makes football so interesting. Playing football manager is fun, but wont represent what will happen in the league
