“Super” Opinions on Today’s Super Draft

By: Brian | January 13th, 2011

The best part of post-draft analysis is that everyone’s opinion may be right. Hometown fans are usually very optimistic and begin that glimmer of hope that this coming season might bring them a championship.
Since nobody can prove my opinions wrong (yet), here is my take on the “super” winners , losers and highlights of the day.

DC United

Winner: Overall Best Draft Day – DC UNITED
DC took another huge step toward building what may be a historic dynasty in our nation’s capital. Selecting Kitchen and Korb in the first two rounds adds a toughness that was severely lacking last year. Both defenders are extremely aggressive in winning balls and seem to have great discipline along the back line. Last year DC came away with Najar and now it seems they are making a habit of winning on draft day. Now, it is time to start winning on the pitch.

Teams Coming Away Very Happy:
Chivas USA selected forward Victor Estupinan and right-back Zarek Valentin and Houston also selected a forward and right-back in Kofie Sarkodie and Will Bruin. All four of these players should make an immediate positive impact. Chivas and Dynamo fans should celebrate tonight.

Clubs That Are Looking Good For The Future:
Seattle, LA Galaxy and Columbus all helped themselves today when looking toward the future. Seattle and LA don’t have a ton of positions open so they added good, young depth. In the case of Seattle they bring in 5 new faces. Columbus is in the midst of some kind of restructuring and appears to be rebuilding for another serious run in 2012 or 2013.

Good Drafts….But…
Vancouver and Portland did well for themselves today, but let’s not forget they are expansion teams and history says their inaugural season will be more like that of Philadelphia than the one experienced by Seattle.

Finally…The Thanks For Trying Award:
San Jose, Real Salt Lake, Colorado, and probably Toronto won’t see much fruit from this draft. Eddie Abobio of Colorado might prove me wrong, but the rest of the selections by these clubs are guys who most likely will not be sought after by European clubs in the near future.

Vancouver are an established club, with a great youth development system, serious soccer people in the front office, and players that will compete at this level. Building a team from scratch (a la TFC) is so much more difficult than taking a highly-successful club and improving it slightly to get it up to speed for the MLS.

Brenton, I hope you are correct. It will be a good thing for MLS to have at least one good club in Canada!

I’m surprised you didn’t mention New York. Despite having less then optimal picks, they ended the day with a solid batch of possible sleepers including Lil’ Wayne.

saying that San Jose, Real Salt Lake, Colorado, and Toronto had bad draft picks because their players won’t be making a move to europe is unfair. since when is going to europe a good measure of talent for MLS? MLS isn’t and shouldn’t be a conduit for players to get to europe. if some of them end up there, great for them. just because they don’t doesn’t mean the teams or leagues are worse off than others.

.Ten points is the largest homedog point spread in a playoff game that I could find. I researched recent playoff homedogs
