Real Salt Lake-Columbus Highlights
By: travis | April 3rd, 2009That was a much different game than I was expecting. Robbie Findley — who I think will make a run for the national team one day — was on form, but needs to thank Will Hesmer for gifting him two goals. That aside, it could have been much worse than the final 4-1 score if not for some quality saves by Hesmer later on. I was hoping to see better attendance at Rio Tinto as well, but some rotten weather kept fans away. What’s the point of a new stadium if it isn’t filled up? Other markets trying to build stadiums must look at places like Real and wonder if they can really put butts in seats too.

I love Robbie Findley. I always regretted that the Galaxy let him go.

Travis, I agree about the disapointing crowd attendance at last night’s game. The weather was pretty bad, though, but I think the bigger factor in the small crowd was that it was a Thursday night game with school still in session. In Utah, kids just don’t stay out on school nights generally. That said, my high school freshman and senior were both at the game and didn’t seem to mind being cold and wet. According to RSL’s website, attendance was 11,806. I am confident that number will go way up when the weather gets just a bit better and the game is not on a school night. Real wll pack the stadium for most of its home games this summer. What was more concerning to me last week was hearing the low attendance at FC Dallas’s home match on a Sunday against Chivas – 6,524. That had me scratching my head in puzzlement.

Honestly, I wish MLS would allow ownership groups to build smaller stadiums that could then be added on to after several years if the situation calls for it. (i.e.: A 12,000 seat stadium that could be converted to hold an additional 5,000 or so.)
I’m obviously not an architect, so I don’t know if that’s totally feasible, but Montreal seems to have a stadium that could be added on to.

And on the flip side, Toronto is now kicking themselves for not going bigger. Expandable stadiums are an interesting concept.
What Seattle’s doing is interesting, too — a football stadium with just the lower bowl opened. It really does feel like a full house on game days, even though it’s technically less than half the capacity. But you wouldn’t want to go to that expense for teams that get less than 10k crowds. And it’s hard to tell up front which teams will be successful. (I would have though NYC would have great attendance.)
