Portland Wants MLS Bad

By: Laurie | March 1st, 2009

Photo from a recent rally to bring MLS to Portland. (Because when your fiercest USL rivals get a franchise and you don’t, it’s pretty tough to take.)

Come on, MLS! Bring back the rivalry!!

(And while you’re at it, stick Vancouver on the list and really make the I-5 competition sizzle.)

Photo cheerfully stolen from MLS Rumors, where they also have video.

Build a stadium, or find a Microsoft founder, TV star, or other influential people, and Donny will come.

We at MLS Rumors endorse the Portland bid. It makes the most sense and has the least amount of risk in the current economic climate. A historic rivalry with the Sounders, a historic stadium in a downtown location next to mass transit, an engaged and passionate fan base. Basically Portland would be like Toronto and Seattle, they’d sell out ever game.

Dave, yes, Timber Jim is the Timbers mascot. (The original retired last year. Not sure if the replacement is known as “Timber Jim” or “Timber Whatever-the-hell-his-real-name-is.) But they do still have a lumberjack scaring the pants off small children, with a working chainsaw and a deep hatred of Seattle.

FYI…The new mascot is Timber Joey. He’s good people, too.
