I’m in the same boat Rossi’s in- Italian parents, born in New Jersey.
And I’d choose the Azzurri in a heartbeat too

i think a lot of italian americans identify with their italian heritage. and he was 13 when he started in the parma youth system. it really isnt that much of a surprise.

I wouldn’t regret the decision if I were him.

Matt, he moved back to Italy at a young age to play with parma. I’m also an Italian living in the US, and I would easily make the same choice. There’s no need to call him a twatwaffle, its people like you that give Americans the reputation of being ignorant bigots.

the sad thing for him is that he will probably ride the bench for most of his national team career. USA soccer is on the rise and he could have been an instant hit. mark my words ten years from now he will regret not playing for the USA.

who could move to parma at 13 and be asked to play for italy and not do it? im 13, and have italian grandparents, and i know that if i was that good i would be azzurri too.

Rossi is the future of the Azurri…do you see any other Italian strikers his age playing at his level?

This happens in France all the time, with the other nations being in Africa. A lot of kids are called up for the U-whatever teams, and they’re just certain they can be stars on the full national team. By the time they realize they’ve made a mistake, it’s too late. It’s a tragedy both for the kids and for the countries they would otherwise play for.
I actually wish him luck — everybody should get the chance to follow his/her heart. But like Bocasaints, I think he may regret it in the longterm.

Hold on.
He’s playing in Europe for Villareal, half owned by Manshester United and making tens of thousands of Euros per week.
He’s represented Italy on a bunch of U sides including the U21 European Cup.
He’s played in the Summer Olympics and gotten honors there.
He’s currently playing with the World Cup Champions (who incidentally, also play in the European Cup and have a real shot at any time to win either of those competitions), getting playing time in World Cup qualifiers and friendlies against top competition.
And he’s going to regret this?

MAD
he got cut from man u. and he’s riding the bench for the italians. if he played for the USA he would be an instant star and maybe help them make a push. what would he more famous for? leading the USA to its first world cup or being on the italian team that wins a world cup but being subbed in for the last 10 minutes of a couple of matches.

bocasaints
Manchester United sold G. Rossi to Villarreal, but left a clause in his transfer that they would have an option to purchase him back at a later date. As far as him being on the bench, he is a newcomer to the Senior team. There is a pecking order he had to go through, but the way he impressed in London will probably give him a much better chance in starting in the future.
Also, being an Italian from New Jersey too (1/2 Chinese, 1/2 Italian, whatever), I would have picked to play for the Azzurri in a heart beat if I was given the chance. I think anybody that is heart broken over him (and or Subotic) not choosing the USMNT needs to get over, and be realistic.

“and he’s riding the bench for the italians.”
He has 3 apps and he’s only 22. I think he started a game, and he was definitely put in for a half in another meaningful game in October.
“leading the USA to its first world cup or being on the italian team that wins a world cup but being subbed in for the last 10 minutes of a couple of matches.”
First of all, there is no indication that the US is anywhere near winning anything with or without him. Second of all, when he practices with Italy, he practices with some of the best players in the world. Thirdly, and most importantly, how do you know any of what you said will happen… what if he gets to start by 2010?
What is happening right now is that he is playing first division in a competitive league in Europe. He’s making money. He is playing on one of the best national teams in the world. And he doesn’t owe anyone here anything. Can’t blame him one bit.

I think it’s harsh to say that he’s adding insult to injury. It’s been his dream since he was little. There should be no hard feelings here. Subotic on the other hand? Pan him all you want.

Wow, look at the responses!
I love beating this DEAD horse btw.
As the world knows already, I am Argie. Argies grow up much like Italians, with their roots firmly placed in the mother land. And though Laurie is right and he didnt waste any taxpayer money, it is just a shame to me that he was bought up in the American system, was given American support, and scoffs in the face of the country that gave him his beginnings.
Yes, his father trained him as well. Yes, he loves his homeland and the prospects of playing with the legendary Azzuri, with all their glitz and glamour, can be tempting. But there will always be something wrong with the way his whole ordeal went down.
btw – the reason I put this up is because he comes off so smug. It bought back old feelings of UGHness.
Subotic I actually understand btw, since he wasn’t bought up through our system nor lived here all that much. Kinda like Brede Hangeland. So go figure.

But Subotic was a U17/U20 player whereas Rossi was not.

But Subotic wasnt raised here like Rossi was. Its the being here your whole life thing. I know plenty who have done it in other countries, but it makes it no more acceptable or likeable to me. Ah wells.

Mario-How exactly does calling him a “twatwaffle” make me a bigot? Is that a common thing that people call “Italians” (emphasis on the quotations). I know Rossi’s story and how he had Italian parents and was with Parma and blah blah blah blah. I am not a fan of players getting to choose where they play their international football. I wasn’t a fan of my own Aiden McGeady going to the ROI, though that is a little different, mostly because I doubt Rossi faced anti-Italian racism in the America that helped make his decision like was the case with McGeady.
Besides, like I said, he was born in Jersey…JERSEY!

Owen Hargreaves. Canada might not be the States when it comes to soccer, but pretty much the same situation.
Rossi made the right choice. Hargreaves did too.

Tommy Smith ruined the clip at the end. Ol’ onion bags himself.

Dave Martinez – Adding Insult to Injury
This blog should be run by a Real American and not some Argie.Posted from

Real American-lolz. Shouldn’t you be running the Lazio blog?

Actually, the language lover in me applauds the creative use of the word “twatwaffle” and is saving the word to pull out at an appropriate time.

I agree that rossi is a twat, mario is lost in lala land with all those italians in guinea vil. I was not born here but I would choose the US no matter how much money or trash italy or any nation would pour into my head. YEAH thats right boyhood dream my ass, its all about $$$$ GREED, etc. He has no love for that country, in fact he is probally as much italian as I am salvadorian. Just because I live near salvadorians does not make me from el salvador, yes his parents are italian, but would he do the same if he lived in GERMANY and his parents were italian??? I bet he wouldnt, so ROSSI go home and never come back, its twats like you that give immigrants like myself a bad name.
Ciao Puto
