MLS Sending Four Teams to SuperLiga. But…What, no Galaxy?
By: Laurie | March 19th, 2008
From the New York Times:
M.L.S. and Mexico’s soccer federation have announced the eight-team field for the second SuperLiga tournament, which will be July 12-Aug. 5. The four M.L.S. teams are: Houston, winner of the last two M.L.S. Cup titles; New England, the loser in the last three M.L.S. Cup finals; D.C. United, winner of last season’s Supporters’ Shield as the No. 1 team in the regular season; and Chivas USA, the defending Western Conference champion. The four Mexican league teams are Atlante, Santos Laguna, Chivas Guadalajara and Pachuca, the defending SuperLiga and Concacaf Champions Cup champion.
Oh, come on. Even though we all knew the rules, tell me you’re not a little surprised to see that nobody slipped the Galaxy’s name in there at the last minute.
But I suppose the Galaxy are better off than New England. I’d personally rather not get in at all
than get in as “the loser in the last three M.L.S. Cup finals.”
(And the Backhanded Qualifications Standards Award goes to…)
P.S. Does anybody else think that logo looks like a scowling face? I wonder if that was the intent.

The logo looks like some sort of creepy angelfish. Nice to see one international tournament the Gals can’t Beckham their way into.

It blew my mind when the Galaxy weren’t included. Boy am I happy though.

I always thought it looked like some sort of hand held weapon from a first person shooter game.

It’s going to be boring without the Galaxy there.

Those crazy tournaments… based on merit and standing. At least we know the quality of soccer on the pitch will be good.

Does anyone know what the FMF’s yardstick was for selecting their 4 teams? I can pretty much figure out why Pachuca is there, but the others???

So Laurie, you’d rather root for a shitty traveling circus sideshow (which gets more entitlements thrown their way by MLS than Halliburton by the US gov’t) than a team good enough to qualify for the final three years running?
Surely, you jest.
