MLS Offside Week Three Power Rankings

Seattle at number one this week. Best expansion team ever? There’s a lot of people riding high on the Sounders, with good reason. At the moment, they are contenders, but let’s see how they cope with a full season. Chivas, the other team with nine points is right on their heels, showing their mettle with a win against a ten man Crew team.

1. Seattle Sounders FC
Record: 3-0-0
Previous: 2
Comment: A victory at BMO signals that this expansion team is for real.

2. Chicago Fire
Record: 2-0-1
Previous: 1
Comment: A home opening win against the Red Bulls a man down was impressive — but their opponents were not sharp, to say the least. The Fire are the deepest team in the league, bar none.

3. Chivas USA
Record: 3-0-0
Previous: 3
Comment: Holding serve again with a win against Columbus. Let’s see how long the Goats can keep this up.

4. New England Revolution
Record: 2-0-1
Previous: 5
Comment: Another scrappy win and New England is tops of the Eastern Conference. Impressive to say the least, and a bye week to sort out their injuries will be a huge boost.

5. Real Salt Lake
Record: 1-1-0
Previous: 11
Comment: A big jump for Real Salt Lake after an impressive 4-1 smashing of Columbus.

6. Colorado Rapids
Record: 2-1-0
Previous: 7
Comment: A win for the Rapids against LA. Who said they couldn’t play on the road?

7. D.C. United
Record: 1-0-2
Previous: 9
Comment: First win of 2009 comes with a shutout. The injury situation is stabilizing, something that will greatly help Tom Soehn.

8. Toronto FC
Record: 1-1-1
Previous: 4
Comment: Toronto got bested by Seattle, but I still think they will contend — especially if they can get results away from home.

9. Kansas City Wizards
Record: 1-2-0
Previous: 14
Comment: Bouncing back from two losses with a win at their half-field in KC. Terrible weather, if you caught any of the game.

10. San Jose Earthquakes
Record: 1-2-0
Previous: 8
Comment: The Quakes toothless offense reared its ugly head against the Wizards, only getting one shot.

11. Columbus Crew
Record: 0-2-2
Previous: 6
Comment: What’s up with the defending champs?

12. Houston Dynamo
Record: 0-2-1
Previous: 10
Comment: The Dynamo are searching for answers on the offensive side of the ball. They had a few chances to snatch a draw in D.C. but came up empty.

13. Los Angeles Galaxy
Record: 0-1-1
Previous: 12
Comment: An ugly home loss for the Galaxy. Could the defense get any worse?

14. New York Red Bulls
Record: 0-2-1
Previous: 13
Comment: Atrocious play in Chicago. How could they not at least force a draw with a man advantage. I’m not sure what Osorio is doing out there, but he needs to get his ducks in a row.

15. FC Dallas
Record: 0-3-0
Previous: 15
Comment: Still haven’t sorted out their problems, though a better performance against New England.
