MLS Offside Week Four Power Rankings

By: travis | April 16th, 2009

So someone finally beat Seattle — the Wizards knocking off the league’s new darlings, something that was bound to happen. Sorry Seattle fans. This, of course, means a drop from the top of the power rankings to third overall, which isn’t too shabby. Chivas takes Seattle’s place at the top, and is a unanimous pick at number one this week. That’ll be sure to chance after another weekend, but for now the Goats can enjoy their moment. You’ll see that there hasn’t been a whole lot of movement this week. That’s what happens when you have a lot of draws.

Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter or contact MLS Offside with tips and news at mlsoffside[at]gmail.com. The rankings are after the jump.

1. Chivas USA
Record: 3-0-1
Previous: 3
Comment: A draw in the Super Clasico didn’t damage their standing, though they should have come away with all three points.

2. Chicago Fire
Record: 2-0-2
Previous: 2
Comment: A lucky draw against San Jose on the road, how long will they leave Chris Rolfe on the bench?

3. Seattle Sounders FC
Record: 3-1-0
Previous: 1
Comment: Dethroned after just one week at the top, but there’s no reason to believe these guys aren’t for real.

4. New England Revolution
Record: 2-0-1
Previous: 4
Comment: Not moving after a week off. Still, how long can they keep this up with the injuries they have mounting?

5. Real Salt Lake
Record: 2-1-0
Previous: 5
Comment: If Rio Tinto becomes the new Rice Eccles, RSL might be able to make another playoff run.

6. Colorado Rapids
Record: 2-1-1
Previous: 6
Comment: A draw on the road against the defending champs is quite an accomplishment. Let’s see if the Rapids can keep this up.

7. Kansas City Wizards
Record: 2-2-0
Previous: 9
Comment: Two wins in a row for the Wizards accompanied by two shut outs. They were outplayed by Seattle, but got the result.

8. Toronto FC
Record: 1-1-2
Previous: 8
Comment: A draw against Dallas at home? I was not expecting that… is that an indication of Dallas’ improvement or TFC failing to meet expectations?

9. D.C. United
Record: 1-1-2
Previous: 7
Comment: A loss against a tough RSL side isn’t bad, but this team cannot hold onto a lead. Only three goals in their past three games as well.

10. San Jose Earthquakes
Record: 1-2-1
Previous: 10
Comment: Should have won at home against the Fire. Joe Cannon has got to turn that shot around the post.

11. Columbus Crew
Record: 0-2-2
Previous: 11
Comment: The Crew’s struggles continue. Is it time to worry, or is it just too early?

12. Los Angeles Galaxy
Record: 0-1-2
Previous: 13
Comment: A tough Super Clasico with good news: the Galaxy have their goalie.

13. Houston Dynamo
Record: 0-2-2
Previous: 12
Comment: Reinforcements are arriving in Houston — but can they save the day?

14. New York Red Bulls
Record: 0-2-2
Previous: 14
Comment: A pretty ugly match in Houston. Jon Conway should be returning on the weekend, a welcome sight for all Red Bull fans.

15. FC Dallas
Record: 0-3-1
Previous: 15
Comment: Their first point of the season, in a tough environment. It’s certainly something to build on, but they need to find that elusive first win.

I’d also like to point out that at this point in the season it’s pretty easy to predict who’s hot and who’s not — it’s very close to the standings. As the season goes on, it gets much harder.

P.S. Jeff! How ya doin’? They treating you good at BS?

Also, just stopped by Jeff’s Power Rankings. It contains this little nugget:

    - First and foremost, I am pleased to announce that a member of the Politburo has nearly reached a state Ideological Perfection! The rankings posted by travis of The Offside fell just one pairing shy of matching the Pure Brilliance of the Collective mind. One step closer, dear Comrades.

That’s us. One step short of perfection. :-D
