MLS Offside Preseason Power Rankings
By: travis | March 19th, 2009First kick is creeping close and closer. Just around 10 hours away. Before that, I’d like to introduce our newest feature here on MLS Offside – the Power Rankings. Starting today and going through the season, we’ll put together a weekly poll amongst the team bloggers — still need help on that too — and add up the results to produce the weekly poll. Look for this to be out on a Monday morning basis. I know that it is Thursday, but things got caught up and didn’t get around to this yesterday. Monday’s version will be more extensive, with a one sentence summary of what is going on with each team. For now, take a look at what we’ve come up with:
1. Columbus Crew
2. Chicago Fire
3. New York Red Bull
4. Houston Dynamo
5. Real Salt Lake
6. Toronto FC
7. D.C. United
8. Chivas USA
9. New England Revolution
10. Kansas City Wizards
11. San Jose Earthquakes
12. FC Dallas
13. Seattle Sounders FC
14. Colorado Rapids
15. Los Angeles Galaxy
Thanks to all for voting on such short notice. I know it looks kind of blah — I wanted to get it done before tonight’s game. Any suggestions welcome, though I’ll be playing with the layout over the next few weeks.

I love that the Gals are so low. When we pick up a few wins early and everyone will be talking about the Bruce being great again, and forgetting who the “DB” is.

The power ranking look pretty good, but I have to wonder aloud if the Red Bulls are actually quite that high… of course, that is why the games get played. Anything can happen when the match begins. Galaxy sure has a lot to prove this year. I’d say that LA’s past performance rates the anchor position on this pre-season power ranking and it remains to be seen if the team can live up to its potential. This will be the first full-year with Arena, and I think it will become apparent very quickly if he has made headway in solving LA’s defensive problem.

Rocky! RBNY is a bit high, but I would still give them a top 5 status. RSL gets no respect. Houston gets too much. New England is being dangerously ignored by everyone (including me).

I think Red Bulls are benefiting from their Cup run last year. In my mind, deserves a bit of respect. Plus I like them (except for tonight, when they’re playing Seattle) and want them to do well.
It is currently POURING rain here, btw, and I don’t even own a raincoat.

I like the rankings and think that Toronto FC could surprise many teams and fans this season. The additions have been plentiful and given them a serious upgrade across the board. They have a great home facility and fan-advantage if they can play better on the road this year, they could be very dangerous.

Wow! The Sounders and Red Bull result sure makes my earlier comment questioning the placement of Red Bulls at number three seem a lot more insightful, doesn’t it? I’m just saying…

I have a feeling that the Sounders success will not be the first surprise of the week. That is why the games get played, right? The team that I wonder about the most (besides RSL) is the LA Galaxy. I keep wondering how they will play on the field and what the Beckham mid-season infusion will do to the chemistry. My gut tells me that the team should not be at the bottom of the table, but who knows what will happen on the field. LA is a mystery.
