MLS Offside Power Rankings: Week Six
By: travis | April 29th, 2009The Power Rankings for this week have been thrown in a blender and tossed around. Teams are climbing, others are on free fall — it’s pretty much all over the place. That’s what happens when some teams drop two games in the span of four days while others concede six goals in one game. Never a dull moment in Major League Soccer, just ask John Carver.
Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter or contact MLS Offside with tips and news at mlsoffside[at]gmail[dot]com. The rankings are after the jump.
1. Chivas USA
Record: 5-1-1
Previous: 1
Comment: Lost their first game at BMO Field but recovered nicely against Dallas. People are still waiting for them to show a flaw, but 16 from 21 possible points is a great start in any league.
2. Seattle Sounders FC
Record: 4-2-0
Previous: 4
Comment: Like I said. Keller back in, shutout and wins continue.
3. Real Salt Lake
Record: 3-2-0
Previous: 6
Comment: Six goals scored against the Revolution — Real has showed what they are capable of, the big question remains how consistent will they be?
4. Toronto FC
Record: 3-2-2
Previous: 10
Comment: Well John Carver reacted by quitting — but two 1-0 wins mean TFC is in first place in the East, and back near the top of the power rankings.
5. Chicago Fire
Record: 2-0-4
Previous: 2
Comment: It was a role reversal for the Fire, as they were the ones coming back, not blowing a two goal lead. Where’s the solid defense?
6. Kansas City Wizards
Record: 3-3-1
Previous: 5
Comment: Dropping one place is a result of other’s success rather than KC’s failures. I think Onalfo has found the right lineup, and this team will continue to enjoy solid play.
7. D.C. United
Record: 2-1-3
Previous: 8
Comment: A somewhat fortuitous win against New York, but there’s no denying that this United club has a lot of character. They’re going to fight till the end, and probably end up finishing higher than a lot of people predicted them.
8. Colorado Rapids
Record: 2-2-2
Previous: 7
Comment: Pretty much the most average team sits dead center in the power rankings. Coincidence? I think not.
9. New England Revolution
Record: 2-1-2
Previous: 3
Comment: Concede six goals and drop six places. Hard to argue with that, really.
10. Houston Dynamo
Record: 1-2-2
Previous: 13
Comment: Moving up without playing a game is a nice experience. As before, an indication of teams moving down as opposed to Houston actually achieving anything.
11. Columbus Crew
Record: 0-2-4
Previous: 12
Comment: Should have won. You can argue all you want about the red card on Padula, but that was a rash challenge when you’re up 2-0.
12. San Jose Earthquakes
Record: 1-3-2
Previous: 11
Comment: Don’t feel bad. No one else has scored on Kasey Keller this year either.
13. Los Angeles Galaxy
Record: 0-1-4
Previous: 15
Comment: Funny that the Galaxy have only lost one game. Except for the fact they haven’t won a single game either.
14. New York Red Bulls
Record: 1-4-2
Previous: 9
Comment: Two losses by one goal and the Red Bulls are creeping back down to the bottom.
15. FC Dallas
Record: 1-4-1
Previous: 14
Comment: Everyone hates Dallas. Every single vote had them in last place, even though they’ve won a game.
The Major League Soccer Offside Power Rankings are compiled by a vote of each team blogger.

I love to see Real climbing the table, but the real test, though I hate to mention it is how will the team play on the road. All of MLS will likely be a bit concerned coming into Rio Tinto to play, but so far RSL has not transferred their home ways to the road. My other favorite team is Fulham in the Prem, and they were always more dangerous at home than away. Lately, though, Fulham has begun to win away, and that has helped them climb the table and possibly earn a Euro spot for next season. To be top in MLS, you have to be able to win away. RSL is capable, but they have to execute. This week in Colorado – 3rd game in 7 days, will be a real test.

It’s good to see Chicago in fifth, where they belong.

We don’t know if Chicago is good or not yet. The six teams that they have played have a total of 8 wins. conversely, Chivas by themselves have 5.
