MLS Offside Power Rankings: Week 10

By: travis | May 27th, 2009

Not a great deal of change this week. Parity continues to be the spice of life, as Chivas USA shows it isn’t going to run away with the league completely. Power rankings are a lot harder to come up with when there are so many draws. Why can’t coaches start throwing caution to the wind and really going for wins?

Full rankings are after the jump. Don’t forget to follow MLS Offside on Twitter and to email ideas and tips to mlsoffside[at]gmail[dot]com.

1. Chivas USA
Record: 7-1-3
Previous: 1
Comment: The AmeriGoats keep slipping — though not that far. They haven’t lost April 22 against Toronto. A tough test against Chicago awaits pitting No. 1 vs. No. 2.

2. Chicago Fire
Record: 4-0-6
Previous: 2
Comment: I came this close to putting the Fire in the number one spot. While Chivas has mustered just two back-to-back draws, Chicago has gone on the road to earn two wins while shutting out their opponents both games.

3. Seattle Sounders FC
Record: 4-2-3
Previous: 4
Comment: Another team with more wins than ties. It’s such a bizarre and rare sight these days. The draw against Colorado was a brave results, especially with Ljungberg, Evans, and Alonso on the sidelines.

4. D.C. United
Record: 3-1-7
Previous: 3
Comment: RSL came to RFK and parked a bus in front of the net. United knew it was coming, but couldn’t break down the opposition. Too many ties at home could end up costing them down the road.

5. Houston Dynamo
Record: 4-2-3
Previous: 5
Comment: Dwayne De Ro-who? Remember when people thought the Dynamo wouldn’t succeed without De Rosario?

6. Toronto FC
Record: 3-3-4
Previous: 7
Comment: A much needed win win at fortress BMO. Amado Guevara continues to show MVP form and is adjusting nicely with De Rosario. It’s a shame that the Honduran will miss some time this summer, though TFC should be able to survive without him.

7. Kansas City Wizards
Record: 4-4-3
Previous: 6
Comment: A red mist moment by Josh Wolff in combination with some ticky-tack refereeing caused things to go downhill over the weekend. Beautiful free kick by Claudio Lopez, who continues to prove he’s still got it.

8. Colorado Rapids
Record: 3-2-4
Previous: 9
Comment: Conor Casey and Colin Clark continue to play well. A draw is slightly disappointing considering who the Sounders were missing. This team definitely has playoff-caliber talent — the question is, can they keep it together?

9. New England Revolution
Record: 2-3-4
Previous: 8
Comment: Rumblings out of the Northeast say Taylor Twellman could return to action — at least for a brief cameo — over the weekend. That would be a huge boost, as Shalrie Joseph could move back into the midfield.

10. Real Salt Lake
Record: 3-5-2
Previous: 10
Comment: A clean sheet and their first point on the road is something to build on. The question is whether or not they can actually take that next step successfully.

11. Columbus Crew
Record: 1-2-6
Previous: 11
Comment: A weekend of rest before a busy week. If the Crew can pick up two wins this week — they probably won’t, but they could — there’s a chance they could hope back up near the top of the East. Raise your hand if your saw that coming.

12. Los Angeles Galaxy
Record: 1-1-8
Previous: 13
Comment: Make that eight draws on the season. What exactly is Bruce Arena trying to do with his motley crue of 30-somethings + Landon Donovan?

13. New York Red Bulls
Record: 2-2-3
Previous: 12
Comment: A disheartening performance from New York if there’s ever been one. Played well, but met a stout Chicago defense that ultimately proved to strong to beat.

14. FC Dallas
Record: 1-6-3
Previous: 15
Comment: Move up a spot simply because San Jose is that bad.

15. San Jose Earthquakes
Record: 1-6-2
Previous: 14
Comment: Nick Garcia’s mind games worked out well. As I said previously, watch the Houston highlights to see some real shambolic defending.
