MLS Goes to Training.

Though it is now something of old news, two of the league’s biggest DP’s, David Beckham and Thierry Henry, will be spending time “training” during the offseason with Tottenham and Arsenal respectively. The key word here, of course, is training, as it is simply that: training. These are not trades, nor are they loans. This is essentially just a way to keep two big names limber and relevant for the 2011 season.
Ultimately, I suppose this is a step up. Sure, Donovan and Beckham probably wanted full-on winter loans, but this system allows players all the same pageantry without the subsequent diss it sends to MLS. They can show off their moves, and still hail back to their home teams in the USA without sending the message that they long for foreign shores.
What do you think? Is this type of arrangement a good one? Will it catch on? Should it?
PS: Sorry that this and the past post have been short. I have mid-terms next week.

I think many people assumed that Donovan would go back on loan after the 2010 season. Personally I thought it wasn’t a great idea just because of his loan at the beginning of 2010 and the World Cup. It’s a lot of football to be playing. He was pretty certain that he’d be taking a break this offseason.
I expect he’ll be going on loan after 2011 season though, or maybe even a permanent move somewhere in Europe if he plays well this summer in the Gold Cup and in MLS.
