It Was A Long Week

It’s been a week since I last updated. My bad; school gets in the way. Still, a good deal of stuff happened in my absence. Here’s your round up of all the topics I should have written articles on:

Injuries: The most unfortunate part of this is that injuries was pluralized. In the past week’s action two young stars saw devistating injuries mid-game as Steve Zakuani, the star Sounder, broke his leg to a slide tackle from Colorado’s Brian Mullen, and David Ferreira, the 2010 MVP, broke his ankle to a clumsy tackle by Vancouver’s Jonathan Leathers. Zakuani will be out for the season, and Ferreira has no timetable to return. It goes without saying that this is an absolute shame: these rising young players would have been decisive on the field and will now have to catch back up to where they were.

Games:First, New York trounced DC, finally asserting that this would in no way be a dissapointing season. Then Seattle beat Colorado in the Mile High City, despite the aformentioned blow to Steve Zakuani. Subsequently, Chivas beat San Jose (savor it; it’s going to be a long season for the goats), Columbus tied Toronto, Dallas delt Vancouver their first home loss, New England beat Sporting (more on that later), the Fire tied Houston, and LA stomped on Portland (a la Landon).

Revolutionary Signings: After calling dibs on Benny Feilhaber, New England came into Saturday night looking to turn around their already lukewarm season. They may have done that, as they topped Sporting with a 3-2 win, but one which was driven by another recent New ENgland signing, Rajko Lekic. The Danish striker netted his first MLS goal in the 83rd minute, leading the Revs to the win. Maybe this will be an uprwing of a season for New England, whose attendance and fieldwork hasn’t exactly been at the top of the league in past years.

Buzz: Having essentially won the first leg of the CCL Final with a 2-2 tie, there’s no suriprise that RSL is generating buzz. Some have even ranked them among the top 25 teams on the planet. I may not necessarily believe that, and I’m inclined to ask where Galaxy and New York would fall in such ratings, but I’m in no way unhappy. The reality is that Real Salt Lake has a completely legitimate shot at going to the FIFA CLub World Cup, and they’ve already finished the hard part. Let’s all pray.

It was a good, if long week. I’ll try to be more consistent in the coming one.

What do you think?

An interesting article I read today links these sorts of reckless challenges on the style of officiating the MLS had adopted:
    http://www.examiner.com/soccer-in-national/zakuani-s-broken-leg-vs-mls-referee-directive-to-manage-with-personality

I dont know if I 100% agree but I do think that if officials in the MLS were at least more consistent with what actions they caution and what they do not during a game, things would be a lot less dangerous for players. As it says it the article, players foul because the ref lets them. If the league wants to stop these sorts of terrible injuries, they need to take a hard line against dangerous tackles. Full stop.

Those poor guys. It just breaks your heart.

Good information Ben. We can all understand how you can get busy and not have time to do some updates. I know that I would much rather put my CTR360 Maestri cleats on and play soccer than be on PC all the time!
