Is this the Philadelphia Name and Logo?
By: travis | May 7th, 2009
With the announcement of the new Philadelphia team in just four days, leave it to the Internet to fuel speculation. I saw this on MLS Rumors, and while they can push the envelope at times, they also happen to be one of my favorite sites. They, along with a number of other places have leaked the logo at left, as well as the name of the team as Philadelphia Union. While none of this is official, they also released this screenshot of the MLSnet main page from a tip that was sent in.
File this under speculation for sure, but the signs are there that this could be the new name of MLS Philadelphia. I also think that the colors are a solid choice, and the logo is a nice homage to Philadelphia’s history. What are your thoughts — is this for real, or just a smokescreen? And if it is real, is the name/logo any good?
UPDATE: This made front page news in the Philadelphia Inquirer:
“[Union] is going to be the name of the region’s new pro soccer team, which will take the field wearing blue and gold, people familiar with those decisions confirmed yesterday.”
Looks pretty official.

Damnit. That is a really awesome crest.

the snake kind of looks like a pile of dog poo. Nevertheless, a nice tribute to the “don’t tread on me” flag.

I think it’s outstanding. It would be funny though if this isn’t really it and they unveil some crappy Wizards-like logo instead.

-

Yeah it’d be funny if the real logo is bad and this “fake” one is much superior.

It’d be easy enough to photoshop that screeshot, though, wouldn’t it? Regardless, it’s an excellent excellent crest (though my biased little heart still prefers DCU’s in the end).

The crest is nice, but the first thing that came to my mind was like a demon-based serpent… then again i haven’t read the history link thing… And i hope you mean Kansas City Wizards (it is a terrible crest) and not WAshington Wizards (awesome crest)

Yeah, KC Wizards. The “demon-based serpent” is from some cartoon that Ben Franklin did. But maybe BF liked demon-based serpents. He looked like he would be into the occult. That crazy bastard.

The snake is from American History. It was a snake cut up into 13 parts to signify the colonies, with the words “Dont Tread On Me” beneath it. That is what makes it so damn cool to me. Historical, relevant to the city, great color scheme – I have to admit, I am a bit jealous!

Dave, what significance does the Red Bull have with New York? I’m sure there’s got to be something, right?

” Dave, what significance does the Red Bull have with New York? I’m sure there’s got to be something, right? ”
its what people drink when they got club-hopping in New York City……explains everything :p

Well done. Love the local reference. Classy stuff.

Anyone note the 13 stars too, I guess representing colonies? Like the logo, like the colors, like the name. All around nice job. Congrats Philly.

Rich, brilliant my friend. I may have to switch allegiances just for the historical nature of it alone. But then again, I already pledged my love to the Orange so . . .

-

you do realize you’re supposed to put the stars on AFTER you win a championship

-

I love it! Great name, great logo, great colors!

Just to add to the photoshop theory, the USMNT used that same snake in their “don’t tread on me” campaign, and had a similar looking shield, not saying it’s definitely photoshop, just saying the pieces are there
