Henry to Seattle in ‘09? Let the rumors fly…

By: travis | March 30th, 2008

I just uncovered this little nugget of information, which according to some people is three weeks old:

“Seattle FC say they are at an “advanced” stage of a deal to sign Thierry Henry. The Barcelona striker has spoken in the past of his liking for the USA and after a difficult season in Spain could be open to a move.”

I’ve been a fan of Henry and he’s most of the reason I started rooting for Arsenal a few years back. I love his style of play and his times of sheer dominance. Could this be true? I find it hard to believe right now. It’s going to be something that I’ll have to see to believe.

AOL Fanhouse has more detail on it, saying that the source is from World Soccer Daily. And as many of us know, Henry does love America, and is friends with San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker. Please post thoughts here. I for one am quivering with excitment at potentially going to see Henry play next year. Not to jump the gun or anything.

Don’t get my hopes up like that. Because seriously. Henry in my city?

(We won’t have a basketball team by then, though, why would he want to be here?)

Coming to the MLS is one thing. Coming to the first year of an expansion team in the MLS, in a city that, yeah, probably won’t have a basketball team anymore … that’s different. It would be awesome, and I’d come up to Seattle all the time if it happened, but I doubt it.

Give Henry time to adjust to Barca and the Spanish Primera. It’s probably good for me that he doesn’t come to Seattle – if he does, I’d die. And then there wouldn’t be any more Henry man-love.

Paul Allen can get into yacht-buying contests with Roman Abromovich, so he could definitely pay Thierry if he wanted to. But seriously. Not going to happen. Although now it’s in my head and I have to think about it, of course, and get my hopes up.

My daydream always used to be that he would go to Denver to hang out with Allen Iverson. My parents live in Denver, I could totally go home and attempt to follow him around…

I am sure it is a load of crap, but a person can dream. If we cant have him, maybe the Figo rumor will start again and Seattle will get him. I dont really think either of them would miss stinky basketball team anyway.

Ho. Lee. Crap. This is news to me, a brand new Seattle season ticket holder and French football fanatic.

It will never happen, and I cannot imagine Henry in Seattle. Lots of polar fleece and Birkenstocks, no glam. But… Imagine running into Henry at the corner market.

Theres plent of North Face fleeces floating around Connecticut to Laurie, although besides me no one is in to the Birkenstocks? So I guess that rules him out of the Revolution as well…

Come to think of it, there is no glam in playing in the MLS, so this makes no sense for him to move here until he is ready to retire.

I think he’ll def end his career in the USA, however, I would see him playing in either New York, LA or even Chicago. I believe he has already said he’d like to play in NY, but Redbulls wasted their DP on shitty Claudio Reyna. Who I’m not sure is actually dead during their games and they just put his corpse on the field.

There is a serious chance of this happening. It’s not bull at all.

This is what the GM had to say: “Thierry Henry is one of my favorite players of all time. He has spoken in the past about coming to MLS to play soccer,” (Adrian) Hanauer said. “I am now in a position with the Seattle franchise to consider such a player. It would be irresponsible of me not to explore and consider a possibility like this.”

Seattle IS pursuing him with major bucks. More than he is making with Barc believe it or not. The question is not whether a deal is in the works, but whether he will sign, and given his desire to play in America and going on an out with Barc and the want to move his family to a climate more like London (Seattle fits that bill perfectly) I think the chances are pretty damn good.

Hennry and Le Toux as the tandem on the Seattle Sounders FC, mmm sounds good.
