Blast from the past: 1997 MLS

By: travis | July 16th, 2009

I found this gem posted on The Offside Rules, where the always-entertaining Shawn Francis unearthed a highlight video from 1997 MLS. What makes this great are three things: the first, that John Harkes and Eric Wynalda are introducing it, the second, that they seem like they’re on something, and the third is that Steve Ralston is involved in one of the highlights. Please watch:

We’ve come a long way from that, haven’t we?

Hahahahaha! (How sophisticated were the drug tests, back in the day?)

P.S. I never thought I’d say this, but I miss Eric Wynalda.

Great video. I wish Wynalda was back with ESPN.

Wow, they WERE on something! (or something) I can’t believe those were the highlights of the full season.

John Harkes is doing much better in broadcasting these days. What’s Wynalda doing now?

Does anyone else think that John Harkes was channeling Jim Carrey? And that they look almost exactly alike?

That was the most awesome highlight reel because of its “let’s just make this fun” attitude. We’ve come a long way, but are we having as much fun?

Wow. I am amazed at how bad the unis were back then. Huge shirts, tiny shorts and atrocious designs. And yes they were on something.
