$200 Season Tickets for the Ultra-Fan? New England Says Yes

By: Laurie | February 9th, 2009

Yes, you read that right. That’s $200. Not for a game. For a season.

From Our Sports Central:

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution launched its own revolution today.

The Revolution, the Boston/Providence-area Major League Soccer club, has announced a new initiative to offer its most ardent and vocal supporters a special $200 season ticket.

The Supporter’s Season Ticket, which will include standing-room seats in “The Fort,” gives the club’s hard-core supporters the chance to attend the entire 20-game home schedule (regular-season and special event games) and be located with like-minded fans in one area in the stadium – the north end of Gillette Stadium, under the lighthouse.

The goal here is to encourage the hardcore adult fans. (Who are, of course, the people clubs should be encouraging. Except that a lot of teams frequently aren’t. Chicago and New York, I’m lookin’ at you.)

Of course, this might not work in a lot of stadiums with smaller seating capacities. This is at Gillette Stadium, a football stadium (American style) that seats almost 69,000. I’m curious to see what happens if and when they ever get their Soccer Specific Stadium.

Still, though, a refreshing idea in these tough economic times that allows fans to be fans — even if they’re not millionaires.

What do you think about the Revs’ move?

I’m glad their trying something. So many of these teams have done everything all wrong as pertains to marketing over the years. I’m a big revs fan but live 2 and half hours from Foxboro in Connecticut so I’ll probably only make it to 2 or 3 games or I’d be all over this.

10$ per match is damn good, and a team that has a history of not being able to sell is exactly the team that should do it.

It is the aggressive pricing, weekly event, and every game matters that will help MLS in these economic times. It will actually be a stronger league after the economic crisis, while several sports will decrease in importance.
