Is The Shield Cursed?
By: Ben | October 10th, 2011
Since LA clinched the Supporters’ Shield, there’s been a lot of chatter about the “Curse of the Shield”. Namely, that teams who finish the season with the best record and are poised to take the MLS Cup don’t. The stats speak toward this being true:only one third (5/15) of our league’s past Shield winners have gone on to win a second piece of hardware in the same season.
So, will LA disappoint?
It’s hard to say. We all know that the MLS playoffs can lead to their fare share of surprises, and that teams who barely deserve it can reach a Final (*cough* Colorado and Dallas *cough*). I definitely wouldn’t put a random twist of fate out of the cards for the Galaxy, and for the playoffs as a whole. But it’s hard to see LA not taking the league this year. I mean, people, they have 64 points this season (a full 7 more than the second place Sounders), and are the only team to have won more than half of their games. They have David Beckham, they have Landon Donovan, and they have Robbie Keane.
So, no, I don’t think the Curse will repeat in 2011. Prove me wrong in the comments.
