Bizarro MLS
By: Dave Martinez | April 29th, 2008
Through 5 weeks of the MLS season, one would have to wonder if things have been scripted by DC Comics.
Its Bizarro World folks. And there is no denying it.
+ The Columbus Crew are in first place
+ Will Hesmer leads all keepers with 4 wins
+ DC United is in last place
+ The Dynamo are in last place, tied only with expansion team San Jose
+ Houston is also the only team yet to register a win.
+ And let it be known that San Jose (-3) has a better goal differential than Houston (-4).
+ The LA Galaxy are pushing for first with a resurgent Dallas
+ LA is also the highest scoring team in the MLS
+ TFC is a force
+ Claudio Reyna has seen more pitch time than Juan Pablo Angel.
+ Luciano Emilio has one goal in 5 games with 15 shots to call his own
+ Chivas USA and RSL have identical records, and even with the great, european bound Brad Guzan, RSL has conceded less goals!
+ Chad Barrett has become as indispensable to the Fire attack as Cuatehmoc Blanco.
+ Speaking of which, Barrett is also the only player in the league with 2 game winning goals.
+ Amado Guevara is back.
+ My 92 year old neighbor approached me in the elevator and asked me “Have you seen how popular soccer is getting? That Beckham is something else huh?” Shocking.
+ Peguero Jean Phillippe is back. (a Djorkaeff return would be enough form me to question reality)
+ Speaking of which, Alejandro Moreno is the second leading scorer in the league.
+ Jaime Moreno has three times the assists of Blanco
+ Jon Busch (always underrated in my book) leads all keepers this year, conceding only three goals, and has faced the most shots in the league at 31 total.
+ TFC, thus far, is the leagues CLEANEST team. I am serious. Only 4 yellows, 1 red. Amazing.
+ Claudio Lopez and Marcelo Gallardo have scored less goals combined than Jack Jewsbury and Alan Gordon.
Can someone please tell me what is going on?

I prefer to think of DC as sitting in 10th out of 14 in a single table. If you thought the West was comparatively weak last year- this year is starting off as a major Yikes!!! Did MLS really change the playoff rules again so that the top 3 in each conference than the next two best make it (as opposed to top 2 per and then the next 4 best). Under last years rules only Dallas and LA make the playoffs from the West and only DC misses from the East at this point. If the rule change I vaguely remember happened Colorado would make it at the expence of the Red Bulls who have superior points.

it’s good to see some changes in the league and teams that have struggled in the past looking solid right now.
