The Friday Follies: Week 12.By: Ben | June 10th, 2010
Making you seem in the loop on this week’s MLS news.
Vancouver Shows Its Colors: It was a big week for the Vancouver Whitecaps as they officially released the logo and jersey which they will be entering the league with next year. The logo pays tribute to the mountains of Vancouver’s north shore while borrowing colors from the emblem worn by 1979’s Soccer Bowl championship team. The jersey aims for simplicity with an all white home kit and blue for the away while the Canadian telecommunications giant Bell will be their sponsor. Be ready to hear similar news from Portland, who will be entering alongside the Whitecaps next year
Kljestan Makes His Move: In news which should have been news two years ago Chivas USA standout Sacha Kljestan has signed a four year deal with the Belgian side RSC Anderlecht. The team is arguably the biggest in Belgium with 30 league championships, five trophies in European competition, and current membership in the UEFA Champions League. In his 114 matches with the Goats Kljestan tallied 15 goals, 33 assists, and was voted the teams 2008 MVP. He has also spent time with Scotland’s Celtic FC and the US National team, including an appearance in the 2008 Olympic Team. Though this move is far from surprising we wish him the best of luck.
The Galaxy Falls: In a game which will serve only to deepen the growing rivalry between Los Angeles and Salt Lake, the Galaxy’s 10 game winning streak was snapped on Wednesday when RSL defeated them at home. The Galaxy, who hadn’t lost a game in the 2010 season, were without the star power of Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle for the World Cup and David Beckham due to injury. It was a close game, with both sides mounting a strong attack early on, but a fluke play between Pablo Campos and Michael Stephens in the 80th minute left Javier Morales with an easy, if possibly offsides goal.
