Quote of the Day: On Designated Players and Deep Pockets
By: Laurie | April 6th, 2008
“If they want to get a designated player, I certainly can take the lead on that. Let’s go get Ronaldinho. I’ll pay him $25 million a year and put him in a movie.”
– Joe Roth, Hollywood guy and part-owner of the new Seattle MLS expansion club, as quoted in Kickoff MajorLeagueSoccer Magazine, March 2008. Via the Seattle PI.
P.S. Isn’t it great to have ownership with bucks? And yes, this is the same team that was recently linked with a move for Thierry Henry. While we’re at it, why don’t we start a rumor linking them to the other big Barcelona strikers, Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi? Because why stop with two this early in the process?

I think they’re going to end up with a 30 year old from Mexico like everyone else.

Beckham is from Mexico? I didn’t know that.
The word on the street the suits at MLS Seattle are spreading these rumors so the fans won’t revolt when the team isn’t named the Sounders.

You can have Ronaldinho and Henry, but Messi and Eto’o are staying–and with the likes of Bojan and Giovani on the bench, who needs the overrated big-bucks stars?
By the way, “Seattle Sounders FC”–didn’t see that coming (not). I voted for that name as well. Thank goodness there was a write-in, or the fans would be stomping the stadium shouting “UH-LIE-ANCEEEEEE” or “REE-PUB-LICKKKKK”, etc. etc. Just not the same ring as “YOU-NIGH-TED!!!!!” ya know? or for example, the KC Wiz nickname. That’s pretty dag cool. So. Anyway. Good naming, guys…(directed towards the general write-in public, that is.)

The quote from Roth is from MajorLeagueSoccer Magazine (March 2008, Page 19).

It’s fixed, “MLS Magazine.” Sorry about the confusion — I’m afraid the PI got it wrong, and I was just quoting from them.
