Week Two Recap: Goals Galore!

By: travis | April 7th, 2008

All I can say is wow. This past weekend (Thursday included) 28 goals were scored. And in only just seven games. To compare with everyone’s favorite measuring stick, the EPL featured 24 goals in nine games. That’s an impressive statistic, if you ask me. Oh, and I’m not trying to play the whole comparison of the two league. Not going to do that. Of course, that many goals meant that most defenses were as solid as balsa wood. But it is a sign that teams are looking to play attacking football, instead of boring their fans out of the stadium. Nice work.

Interesting tidbit: like the first week, none of the teams playing at home lost. The Dynamo came close, but equalized in stoppage time. An interesting trend to keep an eye on.

Chicago 4-0 New England
This game was over at halftime as the Fire netted four goals by the break. They were helped by a questionable penalty call, plus a red card, although the Revolution are clearly going to miss Twellman more than last week indicated.

LA Galaxy 2-0 San Jose
The Earthquakes offense had as much bite as your toothless Grandma, while Beckham and Donovan scored two nice goals. Still no more than a two man team. And why did they get rid of Cannon?

Kansas City 3-2 Colorado
Two goals from USMNT defender Jimmy Conrad put the Wizards on top, but the Rapids fought back. Their equalizer was hardly a thing of beauty, but Scott Sealy’s winner was downright scrappy.

DC United 4-1 Toronto
Nothing more to say than United beat the crap out of Toronto and D.C. could be the favorites if they turn in a performance like this on a weekly basis.

New York Red Bull 2-0 Columbus
Astro turf, how I hate thee. It created the Red Bulls first goal (essentially) as the shot bounced wayyyy more than it normally would on grass and beat the keeper. The Crew didn’t do much to fight back, and the Red Bull could have won by much more than two if not for some excellent keeping from Will Hesmer.

Chivas 3-1 Real Salt Lake
A game that was never really in doubt. Real had some nice chances, but were never able to keep it close. Worth mentioning that RSL has never beaten Chivas since they came into the league in 2005.

Houston 3-3 FC Dallas
A real cracker of a state derby, the Dynamo were lucky to escape with a draw on a spectacular equalizer by Geoff Cameron (see below).

Goal of the Week:
A lot of skill on display, as well as a number of goals that were downright ugly. Scrambles at the goal mouth were reminiscent of a rugby match. The goal that was not only the most spectacular and also had the most significance (earned a draw) goes to Houston Dynamo rookie midfielder Geoff Cameron, making his first start of his career. Good luck topping that one.

Dave thanks for pointing out my errors. Whoops. I didn’t have time to look it over before posting it. And for the record, the MLS site stole my headline. I put it up first. Check it out over at MLSnet.com
