Well, They Couldn’t Suck Forever
By: Ben | May 30th, 2011In any league, and in any sport, there’s always going to have to be a handful of teams that aren’t doing to well. It’s just the facts, and it will periodically happen to just about every franchise.
Of course, most teams won’t look at this as a chance to serve the greater good and accept the position, and all will eventually make moves to fix whatever ails them. The first step in turning around one of these sinking ships could be to bring in new players, cut out slack, or reshuffle the management (though the clever reader will note that this is a bad metaphor, for the direction that a sinking ship faces is the least of its problems).
This is exactly what two such MLS teams have done in the past days, as both Chicago and Vancouver have given their coaches the pink slip.
In Chicago this went out to Carlos De Los Cobos, whose Fire have struggled to a 1-4-6 record so far. De Los Cobos, who took over after Denis Hamlett at the start of 2010, never seemed to gel with the club, and was eventually dropped after a second rocky year. The former Fireman (can we call them that?) and recent Technical Director at the club Frank Klopas will be taking over, and will be looking to bring Chicago back to its long lost Eastern dominance.
Similarly, on Saturday night Vancouver reached a milestone with its first sacking of an MLS coach, as the club parted ways with boss Teitur Thordarson. Thordarson’s Whitecaps were like dynamite; they started off with a bang, but after that it was all blood and gore. The Caps came out of the gate with a huge 4-2 opening victory over Toronto, but haven’t won a game in any competition since March (except for one game against Montreal), and tomorrow starts June. Vancouver’s brass must have woken up and looked at their calendars, because now Tom Soehn, the former coach of DC, is in the drivers seat, and will be joined by the aforementioned Denis Hamlett, who will serve as his assistant. Soehn and co will seek a quick turnaround for what could be a disastrous 1-5-6 season, as while Vancouver’s attendance and hopes are high, this is really their last chance to avoid a serious case of “expansion club’s syndrome”. They have their work cut out too, as they’ll be facing Chivas, RSL, and Seattle in the coming weeks, three very formidable foes for a newly gelling team.
It’ll be interesting to see where these two coaches go. Both need to make some serious roster decisions, though its hard to say just where, as both sides are equally offensively and defensively weak. I expect some new players to be pulled in, and definitely some tinkering, but no huge names. I really don’t think either coach is going to get very far without drastic changes.
What do you think?

Agree with Chicago. Not sure about Vancouver. That one feels premature. Expansion teams always struggle except for 1998. Vancouver has a good team, but it hasn’t been lucky. I think they got rid of a good coach before giving him a chance to succeed.
